Spelunking along the Florida Trail, Citrus County.

I am drawn to the cave opening carved into a small limestone cliff. I spot an opening low to the ground that could only be entered by crawling. At this moment, I decided I am going inside to explore or spelunk. Spelunking is a word of Greek origin that means “the art of exploring caves.” Continue reading

Hiking the Citrus C loop offers challenging pine ridges with caves and large sinks.

The Citrus C Loop is a 13 mile trek located in the heart of the karst cartography of the Brooksville Ridgeboasting large sinks and at least one known cave entrance. There is parking available at the Mine Holder Campground, just a 1.5 mile hike off the loop. I chose to save a few steps and park where Forest Road 17 intersects the B Loop and hike down to the connector. The west side of the trail has challenging pine ridges that gave my legs a good workout as I ascended and descended the hills numerous times. I made my way past the B-C connector loop and entered an area that had been recently burned. There was not a pine needle left on the ground! Continue reading

Volunteering for the FWC: Fire Prepping the RCW Nesting Trees Truely Makes a Difference!

I found one tree where the fire had sadly scorched to tree all the way up to the canopy. This tree was part of an inactive cluster and was not fire-prepped prior to the burn. Then to my surprise a little further down the trail I spotted another RCW tree where the tree had been fire prepped properly. The ring had been raked so well that the fire stopped at the edge and did not have enough fuel (debris) to continue burning up to the tree. This left the active cluster tree completely intouched by the flames! “The fire prep had worked!” I exclaimed to myself. It felt good to know that the hardwork us volunteers were doing in the field made a difference.

Florida Trail: Hike Potts Preserve River Trail for Giant Cypress Knees and lush Cabbage Palm Hammocks

It has always been my experience that they pick the most scenic routes when building their trails and I was not disappointed with this trail. The River Trail along with the Cabin Loop side trail takes you into the scenic river floodplain of giant cypress knees along the Withlacoochee River then through lush Cabbage Palm and Oak Hammocks. Today the oaks were dripping with migrant Robin Families! Take in the rustic scenery of the cabin loop trail as you explore a run down cabin along the river bluff that was built when this land was once a homestead.

The last frontier: My paddle to Three Sisters Springs

It was a rainy overcast day in the low 50′s and dropping last Friday when I paddled out to Three Sisters Springs. This set of Springs is located in a secluded area just off Kings Bay in the town of Crystal River, Florida and is known for its crystal clear blue waters that offers peace and solitude. Today, Three Sisters is still a frontier. I was headed to see the manatees as they gather around these warm waters to wait out Florida’s next cold spell. As I arrive at the entrance, I was in awe as I counted over 30 manatee patiently waiting outside the spring run to Three Sisters. Continue reading
